Mazda Alternators Buying Guide

What an Alternator is

A primary part of the charging system in your car or SUV, and a crucial one. Without it, your vehicle wouldn't run at all.

What One Does

It turns mechanical energy (the movement of parts) into electrical energy (electricity). This is how your car battery charges. It's also how other electrical systems -- dash lights and displays, power windows, the car radio, and the like -- run. It also powers the steering system and windshield wipers, among other parts.

How They Work

It's a process that starts with the engine, serpentine and drive belts, a pulley, and a rotor shaft and ends with the movement of a set of magnetic coils. The coils create a magnetic field -- essentially, electricity that a rectifier on the alternator transforms from AC into DC. The charge is then managed by a voltage regulator.

Why They Fail

Usually, either the parts get damaged, they degrade, the belt ends up overly tight, a jump-start gets done wrong, or an incompatible accessory gets installed. When an alternator goes bad, it often happens without warning, too. However, there are symptoms that suggest one is going out.

The Signs of a Bad One

The most obvious: battery and alternator warning lights on the dashboard. Others include:

  • Lighting and electronics working erratically
  • Fluid leaking out of the alternator
  • Engine squeaking
  • A burning smell under the hood, often near the battery or alternator
  • A dead battery

If you see these, run an alternator inspection and charging system test. If the results call for it, replace the alternator.

When You Change One Otherwise

Every 7 years or every 80,000 to 150,000 miles, whichever benchmark comes first. For more information and instructions, check your owner's manual's maintenance schedule. However, when you order a new one, be sure you buy genuine.

Why You Should Buy a Genuine Mazda Alternator

Your brand makes them guaranteed to fit its cars and SUVs. It follows that one will fit your model.
