Whether you know the starter in your Mazda vehicle as a starter motor, cranking motor, or self-starter, how it works is the same, and uncomplicated, whether it came from the factory remanufactured or new. Put simply, it "cranks" or rotates the engine, using a dedicated motor and relay combo to help get it running. A remote starter works similarly, except there's no need to turn a key in an ignition lock cylinder; it works with the push of a button on a smart key fob.

When the car or SUV you love won't start consistently or at all, though, it's usually because the starter is going out has gone bad. Luckily, when one fails, it's often because of one fairly recognizable cause or another -- notably, corroded terminals, loose wires, or damaged parts. The signs of problems with one are also easily figured out. One is dash instrumentation lighting up when you try unsuccessfully to start your engine. Another is when you try unsuccessfully to jump-start the engine, or when the engine starts in certain gears or drive modes only, and not others. Perhaps one of the most obvious symptoms of a bad starter, however, is when it's covered in oil and/or smoking.

See any of these, and you should install a new OEM starter. Before you buy one, though, be sure it's genuine Mazda, as it'll come compatible with your model. Aftermarket starters may not be as reliable.
