Without a radiator to help "sink" (reduce the effects of) the heat its engine produces as it runs, your Mazda vehicle would almost certainly overheat. How one works -- indeed, how the cooling process works generally -- is as follows.

First, a combination of antifreeze and water, commonly called coolant, flows back and forth between an inlet and outlet through radiator hoses. It gets help from a water pump, and, along the way, a radiator cap pressurizes it. As the coolant moves, it absorbs as much of that heat as possible. Then, a set of fins on the radiator core expel the heat, and finally, a cooling fan scatters it. The result: the engine runs cooler, works better, and lasts longer.

No radiator lasts forever, though. One goes bad, and it'll cause all sorts of problems, with the car heater and air conditioner, with the engine, and more -- everything from malfunctions to overheats and failures. Luckily, there are signs to let you know that's happening, namely fin damage, engine noises that are out of the ordinary, coolant that's turning to sludge, the sweet, syrupy smell of ethylene glycol, and coolant leaks. See any, and you should check your vehicle's temperature gauge to see if the engine's running too hot. Then, inspect the cooling system, replacing the radiator or any relevant parts as needed. Avoid aftermarket parts, though; choose only the genuine article.

Why Buy an OEM Radiator vs. Aftermarket?

With Mazda, you get a fitment guarantee -- that the radiator you buy will be compatible specifically with the car or SUV you drive. Off-brands don't always offer the same assurances.
